কলকাতায় প্রথম রঙ্গমঞ্চ তথা নাট্যমঞ্চ প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয় ১৭৫৩ সালে। নাটক ও নৃত্যকর্মকে উৎসাহিত করতে ব্রিটিশরা 'প্লে হাউস' নামক এ রঙ্গমঞ্চটি প্রতিষ্ঠা করে। কলকাতার লালদিঘীর পূর্ব পাশে লালবাজার রোডে এটি অবস্থিত।
